One piece of the wheel

about

Microtonal music for 6 computer generated sine waves, 2019-2021.

On headphones, you can hear the thing in itself; on a decent pair of speakers you may have different results depending on playback volume, the room you are listening in and your position in that room. On built-in computer or phone speakers, this will sound like warm mush.

If you're interested in knowing some of the technical details underlying the structure of this composition, here you go: each of the six sine waves is moving through a set of frequencies given by the four 3rd-order Euler genera (a family of just intonation tunings developed by the 18th century Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler) with a fundamental of 240 Hz. Each wave has its own set of these fixed frequencies to cycle through at varying rates of change proportional to the difference between one frequency in the series and the next. As all of the waves are moving between the same fundamental and guide tones, there are moments where two or more waves land on the same frequency; however, the differing rates of change give each wave a different length of time at any one point. Because of this, each wave follows a path through the piece which is in one sense unique but in another exactly the same as every other possible path.
